Learn about Other
An Other Seed gives creative work that does not fit comfortably into the current Seed Types a place to belong. Creativity takes far more forms than writing, images, audio, and video, and we don’t want the categories available today to determine what people are allowed to create tomorrow.
Other Seeds can include dance, choreography, sculpture, pottery, ceramics, woodworking, jewelry making, fashion, textile and fiber art, glasswork, metalwork, architecture, model making, floral art, installation art, performance art, puppetry, crafts, mixed-media physical works, and other creative disciplines that don’t yet have a dedicated Seed Type.
In many cases, you will need to use another medium to show us the actual creation. That does not change what the Seed is.
A dancer or choreographer might upload a video of a performance, but the creative work being submitted is the dance or choreography, not the video used to record it. A sculptor might upload several photographs, but the Seed is the sculpture, not the photography. A jewelry maker could photograph a necklace, a woodworker could show a handmade table, or a fashion designer could use images or video to present an original garment.
The distinction is important. The uploaded media documents or presents the creative work; it doesn’t necessarily define it.
Other Seeds can be Original Seeds or inspired Child Seeds. A sculptor might create a physical interpretation of a Fiction Seed’s character. A choreographer could develop a dance from the emotion of a piece of music. A jewelry designer might take colors or shapes from an Imagery Seed and turn them into something wearable. A fashion designer could interpret a fictional world through clothing, while a ceramic artist might create something inspired by a poem.
And those creations can send inspiration back in completely different directions. A sculpture might inspire a story. A dance could inspire music. A piece of jewelry might inspire a character. An architectural concept could become the setting for a film.
Other isn’t intended to be a miscellaneous drawer for things we forgot to categorize. It is intentionally open space for creative disciplines the current Seed Types don’t adequately represent. As the community grows and particular forms become common enough, some may eventually deserve Seed Types of their own.
The purpose is simple: if you created something worth sharing and it doesn’t fit our existing categories, we still want a place for it on The Inspiration Tree.
