Poetry

A Poetry Seed uses language for more than simply communicating information or telling a story. Poetry can use rhythm, imagery, sound, metaphor, structure, repetition, emotion, and even silence to express something that ordinary language sometimes cannot.

Poetry Seeds can include free verse, rhymed poetry, sonnets, haiku, spoken word, prose poetry, narrative poems, lyrical poetry, experimental poetry, epic poetry, performance poetry, song-like verse, and other poetic forms. A Poetry Seed might consist of only a few carefully chosen lines or extend across many pages.

Poetry can tell a story, capture a moment, express an emotion, question an idea, describe something beautiful or terrible, play with language, or deliberately leave meaning open to interpretation. It does not need to rhyme, follow a traditional structure, or even provide a clear answer to what it means.

A Poetry Seed can be deeply personal or completely imagined. It might explore love, grief, anger, nature, identity, memory, humor, politics, spirituality, ordinary life, or something as simple as watching rain fall against a window. Sometimes the power of a poem comes from what it says directly. Sometimes it comes from what the reader discovers between the words.

Poetry Seeds can be Original Seeds or inspired Child Seeds. A poem might respond to the emotion of a photograph, give voice to a character from a Fiction Seed, interpret a piece of music, react to a What If question, or take one small detail from another Seed and transform it into something entirely different.

And poetry can inspire far beyond words. An artist might illustrate a poem. A musician could turn its rhythm or emotion into a song. A filmmaker might interpret it visually. Another poet could answer it with a completely different poem.

The purpose of a Poetry Seed is not to follow a particular form or set of rules. It is to use language creatively and deliberately, giving an idea, experience, image, or emotion a form that may inspire someone else to experience it differently.
