Welcome to the General Discussion Forum. Think of this as the community’s common room, a place to talk about creativity, inspiration, ideas, and the things that don’t naturally belong in the discussion attached to a particular Seed.

The Inspiration Tree is built around a simple idea: creativity doesn’t happen in isolation. Something inspires a story. That story gives someone an idea for an image. The image raises a question that leads to an essay. Someone disagrees with the essay and creates something entirely different. By preserving those connections, we hope to build a living record of how ideas and creativity evolve from one person to another.

You don’t have to publish a Seed to be an important part of that process. Ideas can evolve through conversation too.

What Should We Talk About Here?

Almost anything related to creativity, inspiration, ideas, and the community itself is welcome in General Discussion.

Ask other members a question. Talk about something you’ve been thinking about. Discuss creativity, art, writing, photography, music, technology, culture, or the creative process. Ask for opinions about an idea you’re considering. Talk about creator’s block or something that helped you get through it. Start a conversation about a trend you find fascinating or troubling.

You can even show up with the beginning of an idea and say, “I don’t know what to do with this. What do you see?”

Someone else’s answer might be exactly what you needed.

General Discussion isn’t limited to creators, either. If you enjoy exploring ideas, asking questions, interpreting creative work, or having thoughtful conversations, you’re just as welcome here. Sometimes the person who asks an unexpected question contributes as much to the evolution of an idea as the person who creates the next work.

Start Conversations, Not Advertisements

We absolutely want members to learn about one another and the things they create, but General Discussion will be much more interesting if it becomes a place for conversations rather than a stream of self-promotion.

Instead of simply posting a link to something and asking people to look at it, tell us why you think it’s worth discussing. Ask a question. Explain what you’re struggling with. Tell us what surprised you. Invite another interpretation.

Give people something they can respond to.

The best discussions may eventually inspire completely new Seeds and branches of the Tree.

You Don’t Have to Agree to Inspire Each Other

Some of the most interesting ideas begin with disagreement.

Question an assumption. Offer another interpretation. Explain why you see something differently. Change someone’s mind, or allow them the opportunity to change yours.

We don’t want everyone here thinking the same way. That would make for a very boring Inspiration Tree.

Challenge ideas without attacking the people expressing them. Curiosity, disagreement, humor, debate, and different perspectives are welcome. Bullying, trolling, harassment, and personal attacks aren’t.

Participation in the forum is subject to our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines, but the basic principle is much simpler: remember that there is another human being on the other side of the conversation.

Where Should I Post?

If your discussion is specifically about an existing Seed, the discussion connected to that Seed is usually the best place for it. Keeping that conversation with the Seed allows future visitors to discover the discussion along with the work that inspired it.

If you’re participating in the Alpha and want to discuss testing, bugs, proposed features, development priorities, or Alpha-specific feedback, use the Alpha Forum.

If you’re interested in a specific Seed, you will see a discussion about it directly under that seed. All Seed discussions can also be found in our Seed forum

All our blog posts also have their own discussion topic/comments directly below the post. All blog post discussions can be found in the Blog Comments Forum

For broader conversations about creativity, inspiration, ideas, questions for the community, or topics that simply don’t have a better home, General Discussion is the place.

Most importantly, don’t worry too much about getting everything exactly right. If you have something worth talking about, start the conversation.

Someone here may see something in your idea that you never did.
