About This Seed

This image originally came from Last Resort, but I think it becomes more interesting as a Seed if you forget that story entirely. Look at these two people as strangers and decide for yourself what is happening. A pregnant woman stands in an industrial corridor while an older, obviously agitated man tries to convince her of something. What is he telling her, and why does it matter?

For writers, the possibilities don't need to involve an underwater colony at all. Maybe they're aboard a generation ship, and he has discovered their destination doesn't exist. Perhaps this is an underground bunker, and he believes the disaster outside ended years ago. They could be workers inside a secret research facility, survivors of a pandemic, members of an isolated community, or inhabitants of a future city where leaving is forbidden. Maybe he's lying to manipulate her. Maybe everyone thinks he's crazy and he's the only person telling the truth. Or reverse it completely: she knows something he doesn't.

You could write what happened five minutes before this conversation, what she does immediately afterward, or their next meeting ten years later. Tell the story from his perspective, hers, or from someone secretly listening behind the wall.

Artists could ignore the characters and imagine the world around them. Where is this corridor? Design the facility, spaceship, bunker, prison, laboratory, or settlement. Create the document he's discovered, a propaganda poster from their society, a portrait showing these two characters years later, or an image revealing what actually exists outside.

Video creators could turn the scene into a conspiracy thriller, interrogation, surveillance recording, political advertisement, emergency broadcast, or the opening two minutes of a completely original film.

The original story provides one explanation for this image, but it certainly doesn't have to provide yours. What do you see happening here? Share your interpretation in the discussion, or create a new Seed and give these two people an entirely different story.
