About This Seed
This image was inspired by the short story Last Resort, but I think it can become a starting point for stories and ideas that have very little to do with my original story. If you have already read the story, forget what I wrote for a moment and look only at the image: a pregnant woman, a man preparing to leave, an underwater settlement outside the window, and what appears to be a very emotional goodbye. What do you think is happening?
If you're a writer, perhaps he is leaving on a dangerous mission and knows he may not return. Maybe their child will be the first human born underwater. Perhaps the colony is failing, they've discovered something outside, or one of them has decided to return to the surface. Reverse the assumptions. Maybe she is staying willingly while he desperately wants her to leave. Write the conversation/situation immediately before this moment, what happens five minutes later, or what their child discovers twenty years from now.
Artists could take one element and reinterpret it. Design the colony outside that window, their living quarters, the child's nursery, an underwater vehicle, a propaganda poster recruiting the original colonists, or a portrait of this family years later. What would this same goodbye look like in an underwater city a century from now?
Video creators could make a short film of the goodbye, a trailer for a completely different story, a news report about the colony, a recruitment commercial, a video message left for the unborn child, or a documentary recorded after something went terribly wrong.
