We’ve deliberately resisted adding Likes to The Inspiration Tree because we don’t want the community to become another popularity contest. We already have other ways to show that a Seed is having an impact, including its visible Child Seeds and genealogy, and our Trending system uses a broader scoring system rather than simply counting Likes.
Still, there is something Likes and reactions could provide that those features don’t: a quick and easy way for someone to say, “I saw this, and I appreciated it.”
Not everyone who enjoys a story, image, song, video, or idea wants to write a discussion reply or create a Child Seed. A simple reaction gives them a way to participate, while giving creators something most of us naturally appreciate: recognition.
And recognition can encourage people to keep creating.
What Should Appreciation Look Like?
That’s where we’d particularly like your input.
A familiar Like might be simplest. Appreciate might better fit the community. Or perhaps a few meaningful reactions could say more:
Appreciate — I enjoyed this.
Made Me Think — This gave me something to consider.
Inspired Me — This sparked an idea.
The question isn’t only which reactions we offer. It’s also how much importance we give them.
Should reaction totals be public? Should they appear on creator profiles? Should they become one of the signals considered by our existing Trending system? Could they help people discover Seeds that are suddenly attracting attention without allowing the most popular creators to dominate discovery?
Likes and reactions could encourage participation and give great work another opportunity to spread. But we don’t want creators chasing a score or members assuming the Seed with 1,000 Likes must somehow be “better” than one with 10.
So we’d like your help finding the balance.
