What if a Seed didn’t have to stand alone? A story could become a chapter in a novel. A song could become part of an album. Photographs could become an exhibition. Seeds from many different creators could be brought together around a single theme. Collections would let creators and curators turn individual Seeds into something larger.
They could also become an important part of how creators eventually earn money from their work on The Inspiration Tree. A writer might offer several chapters of a novel publicly and reserve the complete book for paying supporters. A musician could share a few songs and offer access to the full album. Artists, filmmakers, photographers, and other creators could do the same with their own work. Monetization is a much larger subject covered by other Roadmap Candidates, but helping talented creators benefit financially from what they create is an important direction we want to explore.
What Could a Collection Be?
We want Collections to be flexible rather than creating a different system for every kind of creative work. The same basic Collection could be used to create:
- Books, novels, anthologies, and serialized stories
- Albums and playlists
- Art galleries and photography exhibitions
- Graphic novels and comics
- Films with trailers, artwork, soundtracks, or extras
- Portfolios and larger creative projects
- Themed collections such as Thoughts on Consciousness
- Curated recommendations such as The Best Science-Fiction Stories I’ve Found Here
- Personal collections of favorite Seeds
Eventually, Collections could also contain subcollections, allowing something like a novel to contain separate parts and chapters, or an artist’s Collection to contain several exhibitions.
Collections Would Become Part of the Tree
A published Collection would itself be a Seed. It would begin with a Parent Seed that inspired the Collection and could later inspire Child Seeds or entirely new Collections.
The Seeds placed inside a Collection would keep their own genealogies.
Think of the distinction this way:
Genealogy tells us: What inspired this creation?
Collection membership tells us: What does this creation belong with?
A story could therefore appear in its author’s anthology, your Favorite Science Fiction Collection, and someone else’s Stories About AI Collection without changing who created it or what originally inspired it.
Create Something Larger, or Curate What You Discover
Collections wouldn’t only be for creators assembling their own work.
Anyone could become a curator. You might discover twenty Seeds from unrelated creators that explore consciousness and bring them together. You could create a gallery of artwork you love, a rock playlist, a collection of thought-provoking essays, or simply organize your favorite Seeds.
The Save button already available on Seeds could eventually become the starting point. Save something for yourself, add it to an existing Collection, or use it to begin a new one.
Behind the scenes, these would all use the same Collection system. To you, the important part would simply be choosing what you want to collect and how you want people to experience it.
Different Collections Should Look Different
A novel shouldn’t look like an art gallery, and an art gallery shouldn’t look like an album.
We envision offering ready-to-use presentations for common Collection types. Choose a book presentation, gallery, album, general Collection, or another available design without needing to know anything about web development.
Longer term, we also envision allowing independent designers and developers to create new Collection presentations for the community. That could introduce another kind of contributor to The Inspiration Tree: people whose creativity is designing new ways for other people’s work to be experienced.
Public, Private, or Limited Access
Eventually, you could decide who can experience a Collection.
A public Collection would be available to everyone. A private Collection would be visible only to you, useful for organizing ideas, works in progress, research, or material you simply don’t want to publish.
A limited-access Collection could be available only to people you choose or, eventually, people who subscribe or pay for access.
Collections could also contain Seeds that aren’t publicly available on their own. For example, a novelist could make Chapters 1–3 public while the remaining chapters are accessible only inside the complete limited-access novel. Someone granted access to that Collection could read those otherwise private chapters.
That same model could eventually work for albums, films, galleries, courses, comics, and many other forms of creative work.
Looking Further Ahead
Collections could eventually become collaborative as well. Multiple writers could create an anthology, artists could build a shared exhibition, or twenty different creators could contribute writing, music, photography, art, and video inspired by the same idea.
These are possibilities, not promises. The purpose of putting Collections on the Roadmap now is to find out what you would actually want from them before we decide what to build.
